Listen, Learn, and Love: The Power of Active Listening in a Divided World

The conversations are already ramping up as we approach this election season. I have been intentional about listening and asking questions to people I don’t agree with or see the world different than me. Listening is a crucial aspect emphasized throughout the Bible, and here are a few reasons why it is considered important:

1. Guidance and Wisdom: Proverbs 1:5 states, "Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance." The Bible encourages us to listen attentively so that we can gain wisdom, understanding, and guidance from others and God.

2. Relationship with God: The Bible teaches that listening is an essential part of our relationship with God. In John 10:27, Jesus says, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." By actively listening to God's Word and His teachings, we can develop a closer relationship with Him and understand His will for our lives.

3. Honoring Others: The Bible encourages us to listen to and honor other people. James 1:19 advises, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." Through active listening, we show respect, empathy, and love for others. It enables us to understand their needs, concerns, and perspectives better.

4. Avoiding Foolishness and Sin: Proverbs 18:13 cautions, "To answer before listening—that is folly and shame." By actively listening, we can avoid misunderstandings, conflicts, and hasty judgments. It helps us gain a better understanding of situations, make wiser decisions, and avoid falling into sin.

5. Learning and Growth: The Bible emphasizes the importance of learning and growing in faith. Romans 10:17 asserts, "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." By attentively listening to God's Word, sermons, and teachings, we can deepen our understanding of the Scriptures, grow spiritually, and mature in our faith.

In summary, listening is a crucial skill we need to be peacemakers and bridge builders in our polarized and divided society. As followers of Jesus, it is our joy and opportunity to listen and honour those in our lives. In particular, those who don’t think, act, or vote like we do.
